ABSTRACT: The E. ringens spawning biomass estimation cruise based on the egg production method was carried out between Pisco and Paita from 26 August to 16 September 2023, covering a cross-shelf transect extending from 2 to 90 nm offshore. Oceanographic conditions during the survey were markedly influenced by the 2023–24 El Niño event, which reached its first maximum thermal anomaly in August (+4 °C off Chimbote at 20 nm), evidencing the incursion of Subtropical Surface Water (STSW). A total of 78 samples collected with a standard phytoplankton net were examined. Mean plankton volume was 0.77 mL.m-3, with values ranging from 0.075 mL.m-3 off Chimbote to 5.770 mL.m-3 north of Malabrigo. Phytoplankton represented 38% of the total plankton volume. Coastal stations within 30 nm were characterized by assemblages dominated by upwelling-related and neritic diatoms, followed by warm-water diatom taxa. In contrast, stations located beyond the 30-nautical-mile boundary exhibited increased species richness, largely associated with thermophilic dinoflagellates. The cold coastal water (ccw) indicator Protoperidinium obtusum (Karsten) Parke & Dodge was recorded from Pisco to Callao, and between Salaverry and northern Pimentel, within the coastal band. The dinoflagellate Ceratium breve (Ostenfeld & Schmidt) Schröder, indicative of Equatorial Surface Water (ESW), displayed a broad spatial distribution, occurring from nearshore stations between Pisco and Huarmey, as well as off Paita, and extending offshore to 90 nm. Conversely, Tripos praelongus (Lemmermann) Gómez, a characteristic species of STSW, was detected primarily at nearshore stations between Chancay–Huacho and the Chimbote–Salaverry sector. A pronounced shoreward intrusion of STSW was also observed off Pucusana, Chancay, and Salaverry, indicating the development of mixed water masses resulting from the interaction between ESW+STSW.
