ABSTRACT: Our work aims to: (1) determine the community structure and (2) compare its density, biomass, and small-scale distribution of the shallow soft-bottom macrobenthos (18°10’ - 18°20’S). Therefore, we stratified the stations by depth: A (≤ 10 m), B (11-30 m), and C (> 30 m), where sandy sediments predominated, with silt and clay cores (> macrobenthic richness). A total of 45 taxa, 44 metazoans, and 1 giant bacterium were identified. Polychaeta (>90%) comprised: Nephtys ferruginea (A), Paraprionospio pinnata (B), Magelona phyllisae, and Hermundura fauveli (C), followed by crustaceans (e.g., Family Platyschnopidae) and mollusks (e.g., Felicioliva peruviana, Polinices uber). Density ranged from 208±126 to 1258±896 Ind.m-2, and biomass varied between 2.11±2.1 g.m-2 and 144,32±112 g.m-2 (> contributions of N. ferruginea, Emerita analoga, and F. peruviana in the shallow stations). Both community density and richness were higher in stratum B, while biomass was better represented in stratum A. Our cluster analysis responded coherently to the initial bathymetric criterion (>50% similarity), which was better explained in polychaetes (p=0.038), its biomass (p=0.01), and richness (p=0.0075). As far as we know, our work is the most southern study of the spatial distribution of shallow soft-bottom macrobenthos, and the study of sediment influence on that biota, reported so far on the Peruvian coast. Therefore, our results formally represent the first reports of these taxa on the southern coast of Peru.
