ABSTRACT: In April and September 2015, surveys were carried out on the natural prairies of the coastal area of Chérrepe to determine population parameters and biological characteristics of marine macroalgae and in particular Chondracanthus chamissoii Kützing, 1843 and its relation with environmental conditions. Chérrepe is located in the southern limit of Lambayeque (07°10’27”S - 79°41’18”W), its coastal zone presents an important marine dynamic, which, according to the seasonality of the climate, causes the sanding of some areas of the macroalgae prairie. The total biomass estimated in April was 17.33 t ± 19.83%, in September it reached 18.32 t ± 12.87%. The total biomass of the yuyo Ch. chamissoii in April was 6.55 t ± 42.69% and in September it was 5.13 t ± 29.12%. In the case of the marine red algae Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis Dawson, Acleto and Foldvik, 1964 the total biomass in April was 1.82 t ± 49.05% and in September it reached 2.84 t ±30.84%. In relation to the average biomass of macroalgae, in April the average biomass was 793.91 g.m-2 and in September 882.04 g.m-2. For Ch. chamissoi, in April this biomass was 371.69 g.m-2, in September it was calculated 260.55 g.m-2. For G. lemaneiformis the average biomass was 284.95 g.m-2 in April and 468.72 g.m-2 in September. In April, the size of Ch. chamissoii varied between 4.3 and 34.0 cm, with specimens with lengths of less than 10 cm; the mean estimated size was 9.4 cm, in September were sizes between 6.0 and 24.5 cm and average size of 13.1 cm. It is likely that the continuous harvest pressure to which Ch. chamissoii is subjected, coupled with the variations in physical and chemical factors observed in the coastal zone of Lambayeque during 2015 (as a consequence of the development of the El Niño event), did not allowed this species to recover completely.
